India was an elderly woman who lived on Hilton Head Island, and she’d been the first person to truly see Darla’s vision for her coffee truck. It all started when Darla was offering some samples to Brianna. Little did Darla know, India was eavesdropping. In a flash, the woman introduced herself, tried one of Darla’s pastries, and decided to invest. That had been almost a year ago, and since then Darla had come to learn just now nutty her new elderly friend could be. But it was that outrageous personality of hers that always seemed to come in handy during a crisis. Darla hoped that would be the case now.

Darla and Keely pulled up outside of the mechanic shop. In the parking lot, Darla spotted India’s car. Before Keely had turned off the engine, India burst out of her car dressed in layers of colorful scarves despite the summer heat.

“Morning, girls!” she hummed, her large purse swaying at her side. Poking up out of the purse was India’s small baby alligator, dubbed Josie. India was fostering her until the gator could be released into the wild.

“Whoa,” Keely muttered, taking a step back from India when she came near. “That thing is getting pretty big.”

“Over a foot long now,” India sang proudly. “My little Josie has been eating good. Professor Mundle says she’s right on track with her weight and length. She’s flourishing at home with her mommy, aren’t you, sweetie?”

Darla smiled. She always enjoyed having India around. At the very least, she provided a tremendous amount of entertainment. “I like the new carrier,” Darla said. “Or purse… or whatever it is you’ve got going on there.”

“Thanks, sweetie,” India said, doing a slight twirl before stopping abruptly and turning quite serious. “So, sounds like we’ve got a real mess on our hands. That darling Caleb has gotten himself into some trouble.”

“It’s not Caleb’s fault,” Darla insisted. “I told you on the phone how that guy showed up at my house a few days ago. And since Caleb slugged the guy, everyone is assuming that means he’s guilty of the murder.”

“Well, that’s not exactly the only reason,” Keely said. “It seems he was the only one here at the shop, too.”

“Right,” Darla muttered. “But I think the police are missing something.”

“I wholeheartedly agree!” India said. “That Caleb is one of the sweetest boys I’ve ever met. Something is clearly wrong. So, let’s get to the bottom of it! What’s the plan, Darla?”

“Keely and I are going to do some snooping, but if we’re going to do that, I think a distraction is necessary,” Darla said. “That’s where you come in. Can keep the staff occupied for a bit?”

India thought for a moment. “Ooh! I have a wonderful idea.”

With that, India hopped back into her car and backed out of her parking space.

“What’s she doing?” Keely questioned.

“She’ll probably ask for an oil change or something,” Darla suggested.

Moments later, India stepped on the gas and drove her car right into the side of the building!

“Oh my gosh!” Darla yelped.
